Okayso, I wrote this on the night of June 7th (Friday night)…better late than never.

I swear to you that I can clearly remember the first day of sophomore year and freshman year. Nobody warned me that they were going to be over in a blink of an eye. Thanks guys.
What someone also didn’t tell me was that sophomore year was going to be the best AND worst year of my life. I would’ve liked to have known that too, guys.
Freshman year, I knew what classes I was taking for this year (PE dance, mixed choir adv, ACC Eng, APWH, Spanish 1-2 & geometry) and had formulated an opinion on how those classes would go. This is how I thought I would do in these classes (scholarship & citizenship) and how I felt about them:
PE dance: A, A…I thought it was going to be fun & easy & there wasn’t going to be as much running as regular PE. I wanted to have fun my last year of PE.
Mixed Choir Adv: A, A…I felt it was going to be just as fun and stressful as the year before.
ACC English: A, A…let’s be honest, English has always been one of my strong suits.
APWH: B, A…it was an AP class & I was sure I wasn’t going to ACE it, but I knew I was gonna almost get there.
Spanish 1-2: A+, A…I picked this class because it was an easy A & I needed to take a language (might as well pick one that you sometimes speak at home & you hear all the time with one side of the family).
Geometry: D, A…Math, sadly, has never been one of my strongest suits. I didn’t have much expectation for myself in this class.
//Fast forward to today where I got my final grades for this school year & what I know the classes were like//
PE dance: A+, A+…that was one of the most fun and sweaty PE classes I have ever been in. Sure you run less than all the other PE classes, but HOLY SHIT Mrs. Swanson works you out good (even when she’s preggers).
Mixed Choir Adv: A, A…Okay, the pieces weren’t as hard as last year, but the stress level was THROUGH THE ROOF this year & NONE OF US were expecting that.
ACC English: A, A…what did I say? Half of the class slept through the whole year and got an A.
APWH: B, A…bless. APWH was stressful as all holy hell, but not as much as choir so I was able to control myself much more easily because of that.
Spanish 1-2: A+, A+…hahaha what did I tell y’all? I did not have to listen in this class.
Geometry: D, C…okay thank the good Lord that I got a D but I was not expecting to get a C in citizenship, but my teacher is and will forever be weird with citizenship.
On the first day of sophomore year, I remember sitting in Mrs. Kray’s class for aplha advisory with Marco & Jesselle because I didn’t want to sit with people I barely knew in Ms. Petty’s class. Anywaysss, I eventually had to leave and grab my schedule from Ms. Petty and I looked over my classes. My first class was dance PE and Marco had FE, so I started walking with him but I’m pretty sure that I complained about him walking too slow and walked toward the gym with like Mary or someone. I remember taking a seat with Chloe, Jennifer & Kassidy on the bleachers and talking about how we went through with our plan (last year in PE we all agreed to be in dance PE if we passed freshman PE and we were hella excited bc less running and I always thought I was the worst dancer and I wanted to learn how to dance). Some blonde lady walked in front of the dance PE section of the bleachers and said in a sweet and incredibly charming white lady voice, “Hi! Good morning, dancers! I’m Mrs. Swanson and I’m your PE teacher this year! Okay that’s it! You can go back to talking.” Immediately after she stopped talking I was turning to everyone and asking if they watched Grey’s Anatomy (because the woman looks like freaking Jessica Capshaw and I’m like in love with Jessica Capshaw excuse me)…and no one did, so I was freaking out by myself.
The officers in mixed choir ran second period that day. I am one of those officers.
In 3rd period, Theresa & I sat by the door and Mrs. Saiki was nice and we liked her from the get go.
Okayso, here’s the thing for 4th period. Mrs. Vargas wasn’t there. She was on maternity leave. So, instead of meeting Mrs. Vargas, the class met Mr. Estrada who would be our sub (until October). I really didn’t like that guy. I looked around at the knick-knacks and pictures and stickers and magnets that this unknown Mrs. Vargas had around her desk area and I saw an HRC sticker and I decided that I loved her.
Everyone told me about this particular Spanish teacher last year and about how crazy she was. I sat in the back close to her desk and I remember my first taste of her crazy.
On my locator card it said my geometry teacher was Ms. Monrreal, so I went to that class and a lot of my acquaintances were there and we were having a grand old time until a security dude came in and his walkie talkie was like “They’re supposed to be Reza’s” and his face turned into one that said “Oh shit, I’m really sorry for these kids” and he took the whole class to the bungalows. Okayso I heard about this guy before and how crazy he was and how more than half of his students failed his class and I was like “Really? Why am I getting the two teachers that everyone thinks are crazy right after each other?” srsly. So, we all walk in and find an old Persian dude and we all sit down and then he starts talking and we’re all trying to stop ourselves from laughing because it was one of the most interesting accents we have ever heard and I was like “Wow, watch me never get over that.”
So, that was my first day of sophomore year. Let’s go to my last day of sophomore year.
Meryll walked me to the gym and then I stood with Jennifer, Kassidy & Darrian (Chloe wasn’t there) and we were on the subject of Mrs. Swanson and the spelling of her first name again (two “r”s srsly wtf) and then we enter the gym. I sit down with the two Danielles and Darrian and I hear a lot of sophomores giddily realizing that this was their last year of PE and I rolled my eyes because that was my mindset before I met Mrs. Swanson. Junior year used to equal no PE, but now it equals dance team. Did you hear me? For all of my life until this year I thought I had two left feet, but I found out that I am more coordinated than I gave myself credit for. I never wanted to be on the dance team junior year when I was a freshman (although I secretly wanted to be a ballerina since freshman year. When I was in elementary school I wanted to be a painter and then in high school I secretly want to be a ballerina, shouldn’t it be opposite?) and now look at me, absolutely THRILLED to be on it and switching around my schedule next year a few times because of it. When Kassidy, Jennifer & Chloe promised each other we’d be in dance PE together, we never thought it would be this much work or this much fun. I made Darrian a twitter today during first and then found out what The Swan is naming her baby girl (it’s not “Daisy Elise” but she told me that that was a contender for a long time so that made me happy) and then she repeated “Amberr, tainted, beauticorn” like a million times and hugged me a million times. She’s so sweet.
In second period, we ate & played. I wrote a note with quotes and pictures on it for Swanny because of the name thing. We’ve got comp at Disneyland tomorrow and I’ve talked plenty about choir on tumblr, so you know.
And then there was third period. Theresa didn’t go to 1st period, so she didn’t have her grade sheet and then Mrs. Saiki let the both of us go to Mrs. Swanson’s class to grab her grade sheet. We made it to the dance room and found Mrs. Swanson consuming cake with her third period and she was like, “Oh your grade sheet is in the locker room. Let me just eat this first. THIS IS MY THIRD PIECE OF CAKE OH MY GOSH I’M SO FAT!” No Mrs. Swanson, you are pregnant and your stomach is like the size of my stomach excuse yourself. So then we all walk to the locker room and she goes “Oh my gosh, you have two classes together?”
And then I go, “Three—Mrs. Vargas, too.”
“So you see each other every day. Do you ever get tired of each other?”
“Yes.” “Yes, of course.”
She stops in front of her laptop and starts laughing and pointing to something on her desk, “THIS IS A CRUMB FROM THE LAST PIECE OF CAKE THAT I ATE, OH MY GOSH.” and then she hands Thresa had report card thing and she starts talking about her classes and then I hand her the note that I wrote her in second, “Here ya go!”
“Oh, what is this? Is it a note?”
“More or less.”
“Aw.” there was a hug that happened here, “You are so sweet! I love your words, they make me laugh while I’m crying. Do you remember that long Christmas card you wrote me?”
“Yeah, I remember that I was astounded that you read it all!”
“Aw, of course I read it all! That card is a sincere and genuine card that I will keep for a lifetime. I mean, kids give me cards and gifts and stuff but that card really meant a lot to me. Thank you for this!” the was a hug here, “Bye Theresa!”
“Bye Mrs. Swanson.”
“Bye Dulce. See you next year!”
“See you next year.” there was a hug here and then she returned to the dance room and then Theresa was all, “I was waiting for the imminent leap.”
And I go “I was waiting until she was completely gone.” *leaps*
“There it is.” and then we go back to Saiki’s and say our goodbyes…more like see ya laters.
And then 4th period came around. I hung out with Danielle D. & Mrs. Vargas for the whole time. I’m really going to miss her being my teacher, but my sister’s probably gonna get her next year >:D Vargsass let me take her scarf and wear it for the rest of the day bless her soul (✿◠‿◠)
Last day of my Spanish teacher’s crazy. I hung out with Annie & the nickdick (calliou) and then listened to our teacher go on and on about her grandchildren. Some people hugged her & I think she expected me to hug her, but A) I don’t really like hugs and I only like hugs from certain people & B) I actually didn’t like her. I was her favorite student or whatevvs, but she actually taught me nothing & all I could do was feel bad for her because it was a class of assholes and her life is kinda sad. This class was a throwaway class filled with assholes who thought they knew Spanish, but were failing anyway. Idiots.
In Geometry, at first I hung out with Victoria, Rene & Sammy and then I spent the rest of the class with Queniece, Amanda, Ethan & Stephanie. The sighs of relief of getting Ds or Cs were crazy and people almost cried because they passed…I was one of those people. My teacher let me out early & that was that.
I picked up Nia from her class and we went to Mrs. Vargas’s class because I had to give her back her scarf. We hugged for a while and in the middle of it she goes, “Don’t cry.” And I go “I’m not!” and I swear because she said that I was going to start freaking crying ugh. I left the class with my “I love you”s and that was the end of sophomore year.
This shit was absolutely crazy. I grew a lot this year and gained more confidence, which was cool. I found beauty in places I would not have dared to look before and loved more than I ever thought I could. I know the next year won’t be anything like this year, but I pray that it’ll have the kind of spirit that this year had. It was so alive and joyous, almost like a celebration of all the color anyone could possibly bring into this life. Freshman year, I learned to be in the “Now. Here. This.” and sophomore year I leaned that no one is left unchanged. Let’s hope junior year will bring something fruitful into my life…oh the delicious ambiguity.
